SYNCHRONISING ASYNCHRONOUS LEARNING SYSTEM
This project suggests a model to synchronise asynchronous e-learning scheme and explores measures to evaluate the efficacy of the e-learning system in general.
WHO AM I?
WHAT ARE "ASYNCHRONOUS" AND "SYNCHRONOUS" E-LEARNING?
ASYNCHRONOUS
Asynchronous learning does not require lecturer and students to be in the same place and time. Communication can be done outside the constraints of time and place. However, students might not get instant feedbacks and students tend to feel more isolation. (Nicholas Croft, 2015)
Ex) Forums, lecture recordings, collaborative software, quiz
SYNCHRONOUS
Synchronous learning requires lecturer and students to engage in real-time. Students can feel more social presence and can ask questions and get answers in real-time. (Hrastinski, 2008) However, challenges including bandwidth issue, technical glitches and time constraints are still here.
Ex) Livestream, Video conference, Text chat, Scheduled quiz
SYNCHRONISED ASYNCHRONOUS
Asynchronous learning can be aggregated with synchronous learning to maximised learning benefits and overcome limitations.
My suggestion is to introduce a live chat session along with a lecture video being played along with it. Lecturer and tutors can focus more on answering the questions without being distracted. Also, these sessions can be re-used; to support students in a different time zone. YouTube Premieres is very similar to this idea, watch the video below to see how this idea works.
What are possible benefits, drawbacks and improvements to this suggestion?
